Abstract

Providing piano students of Music Schools the opportunity to work on a repertoire deriving from the contemporary Greek music creation is important for numerous reasons; apart from the evident pedagogical value, which is further supported by the  indicative list of works listed under Group C: “Works of the classical or later period” for the 2nd year of compulsory piano education, as presented in the “Detailed Music Education Curriculum for Music Schools” (Gov Gazette 2858/28-12-2015), students come into contact with the Greek music production and develop a strong music identity.

The present paper focuses on the solo piano works of Dinos Constantinides, Greek composer, conductor, pedagogue and violinist – who, despite working most of his life abroad (U.S.A.) and being “attune” to the trends and styles that dominated the world music scene, never stopped incorporating the “Greek element” in his compositions. Sounds from the distant and near past (“ancient Greek element” – “elements of Greek traditional music”) appear covertly in an environment rich in polyrhythmic arrangements and clusters, representative of his own personal “language”. A significant educational tool in understanding Constantinides’ music is the programm notes that accompany his works and provide information on the origin of his musical influences and the techniques he employs. Through analysis and interpretation, students develop their critical thinking and music perception skills by recognizing the way in which traditional forms are transformed and adapted to the music demands of their time, whilst at the same time, they are given the opportunity to develop themselves expressively and technically. The particular repertoire requires rhythmic fluency along with the ability to perform rapid dynamic changes and is addressed to students of an advanced level.
