Abstract

The course "Music Groups" in Music schools of Greece, facilitates the participation of students in organised groups of different genres of music. This research paper, will shed light to the challenges posed in the setting of Music schools in Greece. At the same time, it will bring forth disruptions in the official programmes of study and it will suggest different ways of organising the  particular lesson, both officiallly wise and performatively wise.

Curriculum vitae

Dr. Marina Liontou-Mochament is an oud player, composer, educator and artisticresearcher. Her performance and research interests span from folk music of Anatolia to early 20th century urban music and contemporary modal music performance and composition.

Marina Liontou Mochament was born in Athens (1984).She studied ComputerScience in Athens Economic University and οud in the Department of Folk and Traditional Music in Arta (University of Ioannina). She holds a master’s degree in οud and Performance from Codarts -

University for the Arts (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), whichwas funded by a full scholarship from Onassis Foundation. In October 2023 she completed her phD studies which resulted in a written dissertation thesis and an artistic research outcome under the title : 'Enhancing inspiration: metric modal improvisation and compositional tools in contemporary modal music', in the Academy of Performing Arts, Leiden University, Netherlands.

She has participated in music seminarsunder the guidanceof renowned oud players and musicians (Yurdal tokcan, Evgenios Voulgaris, Harris Labrakis, Mercan Erzincan, Sokratis Sinopoulos) in Ross Daly’s Labyrinth Musical workshop, Crete, Greece.

From 2013 to 2018 she lived and worked in Istanbul as a performing musician. There she co-created Sinafi Trio, with whom she recordedthe album ‘IHO’ for KALANlabel. Sinafi Trio has participated in festivals in Turkey,Greece, Serbia, Italyand Cyprus and they are currently preparing their second album.

She is also a memberof the Crossover trio, with Alkis Zopoglouand Yann Keerim,with whom she performs concerts consisting of the members’ original works. Their last collaboration was with the renowned kaval player, Theodosii Spasov in Belgrade for the Guitar art festival (May 2023) and Sofia for the SoFest 2024.

She was selectedas Emerging artistof EFFEA 2024 (European Festivals Fund for emergingartists) and was funded to compose and present her artistic project in VOLAX, in August 2024, a prestigious fund for only 37 musicians around Europe.

She was selectedto participate in "Building Bridges" program, organised by Centro IncontriHumani in Ascona for 2023 and 2024 (https://www.ciu-ascona.org/a-eng/Activities/Building% 20Bridges.html). Building Bridges is a multinational project based in Switzerland for only seven composers and performers from all around the globe.

She leads workshops on modal music,makam improvisation and music creativity and she is currently working as an oud teacher in the Music School in Drama.
