| Abstract |
Piano teaching in the Greek educational system is characterized by a one-dimensional approach, as the existing curricula (in conservatories and music schools) primarily include compositions by Central European composers of the 18th–19th centuries. Enriching the teaching repertoire can be achieved by incorporating works by Spanish composers inspired by flamenco. The rhythmic character of flamenco dances, the expressiveness of cante jondo melodies, the Phrygian mode and the guitar playing imitation endow these works with a unique identity, making them particularly attractive and beneficial for students. Since educators in the Greek educational system are not familiar with this repertoire, providing relevant teaching guidelines is deemed necessary (Tsiairas, 2022). The suggested teaching method was designed upon Toreros by Antón García Abril (1933–2021), one of the most prominent modern Spanish composers. It is part of Cuadernos de Adriana, a collection of pieces for beginner pianists in three volumes. Toreros, from the third volume, refers to bullfighting and is inspired by flamenco. Based on this piece, the suggested holistic lesson plan includes piece’s essential musical features, performance teaching suggestions and a worksheet with complementary activities aimed at cultivating the student’s musical skills and further understanding of the work (Jacobson, 2015). The use of the internet was also integrated (Baker-Jordan, 2003), while analytical assessment rubrics for students' performance are proposed (Petropoulou, Kasimati & Retalis, 2015). The connection of all the activities with the taught piano piece is an attempt to nullify the dividing lines between the various teaching subjects, aiming at the development of an interdisciplinary education. (Harris, 2014). The study of the suggested teaching methodology took place during the school years 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 and formed the basis for the preparation of this proposal. Data collection took place through participant observation and questionnaires answered from the participants. |
