Abstract

The Suzuki Method, developed in the 1940s by the Japanese violinist and educator Shinichi Suzuki, represents an innovative pedagogical approach to music education. It is based on the philosophy of the "Mother Tongue Method," which posits that every child can learn music in a manner similar to acquiring their native language (Suzuki, 1983). Key features of the method include early initiation of music education, emphasis on auditory experience prior to reading music notation, active parental involvement, and the use of positive reinforcement through repetitive learning (Bigelow, 2012). Initially applied primarily to the violin, the method was extended to guitar in the late 1980s, with significant contributions from American educator Frank Longay, who helped author the first Suzuki Guitar Books (Longay, 1990). The international dissemination of the method began in the United States during the 1950s, where Suzuki collaborated with local musicians and educators to promote his approach (Hermann, 1981). Subsequently, the method gained considerable traction in Europe, with the establishment of Suzuki Associations in various countries and the adaptation of its pedagogical principles to the cultural and educational specificities of each region (Galvagno, 2018; Bigelow, 2012). In Greece, the Suzuki Method is taught exclusively for the guitar and is represented by certified instructor Mirka Maria Lampropoulou, underscoring the successful integration and application of the system within the Greek educational context (European Suzuki Association, n.d.). Overall, the Suzuki Method is internationally recognized as an effective music education system that fosters the development of young musicians through the creation of a supportive learning environment.
